ABOUT
The Coastal Restoration Campaign is led by our Bike Katrina tour.
Each August, during the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we learn more about important issues in coastal communities.
The goal of the 250-mile bike ride is to engage families about their role in building community resiliency.
We seek to:
☆ Increase public awareness on coastal restoration and hurricane preparedness
☆ Educate school children, empower youth
☆ Advocate for long-term investment from Clean Water Act (CWA) & NRDA
☆ Highlight green jobs and the coastal restoration economy
☆ Promote energy-efficient lifestyles
This much we know: the Mighty Mississippi feeds the nation. Barrier islands, estuaries, and wetlands provide economically important industry, fisheries and wildlife habitat – but our coast is extremely vulnerable due to the oil spill, storm surge and sea level rise.
Regrettably, the Mississippi River Delta is experiencing the highest rate of land loss in the United States. Louisiana, for instance, looses a football field of wetlands every 30 seconds.
As steadfast leaders in the movement to Prepare America, the Gulf Coast and New Orleans – TEAM HAPPY recognizes that coastal restoration is vital to hurricane protection.
Stronger hurricanes threaten jobs, cultural heritage and coastal ecosystems. We, in concert with organizations like the National Wildlife Federation, Gulf Restoration Network, Environmental Defense Fund, L9 CSED, Sierra Club, CRCL, America’s Wetland Foundation and Zion Travelers Cooperative Center understand the urgent need to build a healthy gulf.
